The
City Attorney, William M. Grodnick, is the head of the Law Department,
which is staffed with six Assistant City Attorneys.
The City Attorney has the following duties and responsibilities:

Act as the legal advisor for the City and all of its elected and appointed officers
in all matters relating to their official powers and duties.

Attend all regular and special meetings of the City Council.

Prepare, or review for form and legal sufficiency, all ordinances and resolutions
to be considered by the City Council.

Prepare, or review for form and legal sufficiency, all contracts, bonds and other
written instruments that require City approval or signature.

Represent the interests of the City, its employees and elected and appointed officers.

Provide legal opinions when requested by the Mayor, the City Council and the Department
Heads on legal questions pertaining to their respective powers and responsibilities,
or as otherwise required by the duties of the office or department.

Represent all appointive City boards or commissions.

Prosecute on behalf of the City and defend the City, its employees, elected or appointed
officials, in all complaints, suits, controversies where the City, its employees,
elected or appointed officials are named as parties or elect to intervene.

Pursue civil remedies enforcing the provisions of the City Charter and Code, City
Ordinances, and other laws, rules and regulations adopted by the City Code, as permitted
by City Charter and Code, State, County or Federal law.
